    For the last several years, the focus in the AEC market has been repurposing the design team's or sub's BIMs for construction. Our model evaluation service, inspects the model system-by-system, noting any omissions, mistakes, or areas for improvement. And compares the current drawing set to the model's detail. As a MEP subcontractor, you know the building model you receive from either the GC or Engineer can many times be an iterative process of re-purposing by the time your team begins detailing for constructability purposes. How do you evaluate whether or not your systems can meet the needed environment requirements and can be installed against the structural model? The 3D Model Evaluation Service inspects the model system by system noting any omissions, mistakes, or areas for improvement. And compares the current drawing set to the model's detail.

     

    Here are the steps involved:

    Step 1: Complete a brief questionnaire about the scope of the project and modeling exercise

    Step 2: Deliver the contract, the drawings and the model.

    Step 3: Our Services Team will examine and interrogate the model based on eight quality aspects.

    Step 4: We deliver a report to you which grades the model by system. This is a third-party independent review of the model which you can share with the design team and the Owner. It includes detailed explanations of issues with the model, comparing 2D snapshots with 3D snapshots where applicable, plus recommendations for resolving the issue.

    Step 5: You determine if you would like to use the model(s) as-is or receive a quotation from us to fix the model.

  • 3D Modelling

    Using the Level of Detail (LOD) industry specifications as a guide, Trimble’s 3D Modelling Service will create a 3D model of your projects mechanical or electrical systems based on the specificity required. These models aren’t just for show and tell – these are purpose-built models for construction-caliber quantities, schedules, and estimates. You simply specify the format: AutoCAD, Revit for MEP, CADmep, Bentley Smart Plant, etc.

    In today’s dynamic vertical construction environment where new technologies, standards, and file formats are driving BIM requirements across the project stakeholder spectrum, keeping current can be expensive and add un-needed risk.

    Trimble’s 3D Modelling Service is a platform agnostic solution that alleviates the need for your firm to ramp-up skillsets, purchase new technology, or become BIM experts versed in the latest industry standards.As an MEP contractor you provide us with existing construction plans, models, fabrication standards and/or MEP system specifications and our team will create a functional 3D model per the project level of detail (LOD) requirements.

    The BIM’s Level of Detail (LOD)---which defines how the 3D geometry of the building model can achieve different levels of refinement, is used as a measure of the service level required. On VDC Services projects Trimble offers five LOD options ranging from 200 to 500

    Level of Detail

    Level 200

    Model with approximate quantities, size, shape, location, and orientation.

    • Ducts/Gravity pipe/Pressure pipes/FP Pipes: Risers and primary horizontal runs modeled with the same material.
    • All fittings modeled with the default object.
    • Primary equipment is modeled as a box with generic enveloping geometry.

    Level 300

    Model contains system quantity, size, shape, location, and orientation detail.

    • Ducts/Gravity pipes/Pressure pipes: All runs with a diameter of 2" and above are modelled.
    • All fittings modeled with the best matching fitting available in the Vico MEP Virtual Warehouse
    • Rigid conduits: All runs with a diameter of 3" or larger are modeled

    Level 350

    Model contains system quantity, size, shape, location, and orientation detail and interfaces with other building systems.

    • Ducts: flanges are modelled
    • Straight runs are modelled in segments per shop drawing piece length information
    • Ducts/Gravity pipes/pressure pipes: All runs with a diameter of 3/4" or larger are modelled
    • FP pipes: Runs of all sizes modelled
    • Flex connections to fixtures are modelled

    Level 400

    Model contains system quantity, size, shape, location, and orientation detail with detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation information.

    • Ducts: Straight runs modeled in segments per shop drawing piece length information
    • Pressure pipes: Runs of all sizes modeled
    • All fittings modeled with the best matching fitting available in the Vico MEP Virtual Warehouse
    • Flexible conduits are modeled.
    • "Primary fixtures are Modeled with exact geometry per submittal information"
    • Instrumentation and controls: Modeled with detailed geometry to represent the outer limits of the fixture

    Level 500

    Model contains system quantity, size, shape, location, and orientation detail with detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation information…And includes secondary objects.

    *Includes all previous LOD deliverables as well as:

    • Secondary fixtures are modelled with exact geometry.
    • All available pipe, duct and electrical connection points of secondary fixtures and controls are defined per submittal

  • 3D Laser Scanning

    If you are involved in a complex expansion project and under the gun to make it as seamless as possible, then consider using Trimble’s 3D Laser Scanning Service. The service includes laser scanning your existing conditions as well as conducting a full registration of the point cloud, and then coordinating the new with the old for design validation. In the end, you can present the General Contractor with a comparison of the as-built conditions with the as-planned design.

    In today’s world of renovation and retrofit projects, 3D laser scanning solutions provide a cost effective and efficient method for gathering existing locations of electrical and mechanical systems. Our 3D Laser Scanning Service removes the need for your organization to invest in laser scanning hardware and the man-hours required to capture the data. We come to your project, scan the physical area, and deliver a fully registered point cloud for use in your design/detailing process.

    With renovation and retrofit work on the rise, having a viable method for understanding the existing environment and the associated mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems is a key component to being profitable on a project. In many cases, older buildings may not have 2D or 3D design files to aid in the new construction.   • 3D Modelling from Point Cloud

    Once scan data has been collected, Trimble’s Modelling from Point Cloud Service can take the next steps in turning this as-built data into a working 3D model. Using the point cloud to generate 3D solids, the service can then export these modeled components to your chosen 3D modelling environment for further MEP detailing and refinement as specified by the LOD project requirements.

    As an MEP contractor, you may have a received a 3D point cloud from your General Contractor for use in determining the project design/system impacts on an existing structure. A point cloud itself can be simply a visual reference point for your detailing efforts—or the point cloud can serve as a starting point for your MEP system design/detailing efforts. Trimble’s 3D Modelling from Point Cloud service allows your organization to focus on your current workload by offloading the heavy lifting of solids creation from point clouds to the Trimble MEP Services Team.

    We don’t stop there. Once the design is finished, we’ll send the scan solids and new MEP systems addition to the coordination software to make sure that there are no conflicts prior to prefabrication using Tekla BIMsite. The intelligent components maintain their data when opened in the BImsight coordination software and therefore remain invaluable for collaboration with project constituents.
